Galamsey, derived from the phrase 'gather them and sell' is local Ghanaian term which means illegal small-scale mining in Ghana. Such workers are known as Galamseyers orpailleurs in neighboring Francophone Nations.

This illegal mining has been ravaging our planet for decades. Not only is illegal mining riskier from safety perspectives for those who choose to participate, but it encourages reckless behavior and leads to outcomes that have negative long term consequences.

Illegal mining activities were identified as the cause of environmental problems in Ghana such as water pollution, deforestation, poor soil fertility and limited access to the land for agriculture productivity.

The government of Ghana has warned those people practicing illegal mining to stop the illegal act. He therefore says the activities exposed Ghanaian through drinking and inhaling of gaseous Mercury which is absorbed into the blood. Once in the circulatory system, it can pass through the blood brain barrier and accumulate in the brain, damaging the Central nervous system.

Currently , a report from Bremang West District of the Central region states that three people are feared dead in an illegal mining pit after it caved in on them. Despite the deployment of soldiers to areas where illegal mining is rife, some people are bold enough to still engage in the illegal act.

According to the report again, 15 additional people are still trapped in the pit and are yet to be rescued. The report further noted that two others who were fortunate enough to be pulled out of the pit are in critical condition and currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
